Apparently Seasfire have been compared to the Weeknd. Based on the track 'Falling' I can sort of see why, although they feel like a very different beast - much more subtle and without the same overt lewdness to the lyrics. This also feels much more like an evolution of dubstep (specifically a continuation of the James Blake take on it) than R&B. Anyway - it's a lovely little track with lots of atmosphere and some lovely crunchy synth overlays. Check it out. You can hear more over at Seasfire's Soundcloud page. BP x

PYE CORNER AUDIO, 2012 // DIGITAL / BUY: DIGITAL Another year, another fabulous selection of 1/4″ and cassette tapes sourced and transferred by Pye Corner Audio‘s mighty Head technician. Black Mill Tapes Volume 3 follows last year’s Volume 2 which I enjoyed a lot. Subtitled ‘All Pathways Open,’ Volume 3 features a blend of vintage synthesizer electronics and various radiophonic obscurities across twelve tracks and 44+ minutes. Once again, music so great and satisfying that I gladly paid six quid for it. Black Mill Tapes Vol.3 by Pye Corner Audio

Just as art is not something just to be looked at, nor is music something to be simply listened to: it has to be experienced – and that’s why format is a critical component, a transparent concession, that is tragically overlooked nowadays. I don’t mean that in the sense of a nostalgic hark back to the days of vinyl, except in the sense of how your experience, at the very least, is profoundly affected by the sensory modalities of having a real object – in this case a record sleeve – to hold and to gaze at, vinyl to smell, to touch, to handle. Imagine how boring food would be…

On May 29th, 1981, Throbbing Gristle performed their last live show at the Kezar Pavillion in San Francisco, CA. This legendary performance marked the initial breakup of the group and end of its mission. One of the attendees remembers: You know for the life of me I can’t remember anymore about the actual music. I can remember closing my eyes during one piece and floating off into the 4th dimension (no drugs here just TG). I can remember jumping up and down because of the intense beat, and I can remember screaming along with the rest of the audience as they yelled back at Genesis during…

    BlackPlastic
    21 Jan 2012 | 6:36 am
Pool's 'Game Over' is a tribute to video games. You don't get enough of those in music in my opinion - who needs love when you've got a 20-hour-a-week Skyrim habit? Of course there could e some sort of clever analogue to love or getting drunk or something going on here but I'm going to plump for the assumption that this Hamburg three-piece just really dig their Donkey Kong. It's a pretty awesomely catchy-pop record with a lovely bounce to the bass line and a slightly scratchy guitar rhythm. It also sounds quite a bit like Alphabetical-era Phoenix which basically means rather good. 'Don't Say…

Ghost Mutt - Sweat Mode EP by Donky Pitch The world seems to have gone a bit R&B crazy recently, with indie kids swooning over the Weeknd's rich, slow and dark production style and warts and all lyrical style. I've never been much of a fan of the genre aside from the odd track with particularly robotic production (Aaliyah's 'Try Again', Brandy's 'What About Us?’) but something is definitely happening. Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy totally changed my perception of what he was capable of as an artist, the confessional lyrics laced with self-loathing made the album an…

I was a big fan of Sons & Daughters' Mirror! Mirror! album that came out last year and the band have just followed it up with their second batch of remixes, this time focused on 'Orion' (Optimo and Andy Blake have already had a go at 'Silver Spell'). Have a listen in the player above. The Wrong Island mix is pretty decent, spacey and a bit spooky with a massive synth build whilst the Umberto mix is unfortunately pretty forgettable. It's the Emporer Machine mix you should really check out though. Emporer Machine is actually Andy Meecham, one half of the under-rated Chicken Lips, and…

At first I wanted to post some of Broadcast's B-sides and rarities after covering their three main albums in the Warped posts, but then while searching for recordings of Broadcast live (which are very hard to come by) I found this. A bootleg of a show in Australia, and of their last ever performances. It's been just over a year since the untimely death of lead singer Trish Keenan, who continues to remain one of my favourite voices in music. Broadcast were underrated for their entire recording career which I feel is a bit unfair, So I ask…

But it's good to know something about the history of the sound and where it came from. Some of these tracks i randomly selected here are still not available as digital release - and maybe will never be. Make sure you check them out. My fav track here was and still is Billie Ray Martin feat. Ann Peebles - 18 Carat Garbage. Ralf Gum did an absolutely amazing remix on that one.Tracklist:1. 50 is the magic number and our podcast number 50 is delivered by a very special magician. Ulf Eriksson’s magic lab is located in a basement below the southern part of Malmö. There he carefully selects ingredients for the future releases of his very own Kontra Musik. The praised label that claims itself being one big mess despite releasing quality material by Marcell Dettmann, Jonson / Alter, Mokira aka Tilliander, Agaric and Jason Fine over the last 6 years. We caught up with Ulf for a few questions about this hour and a half journey into the depth of Kontra Musik: 1.Tell us about…
  • This is why the vinyl is back and here to stay in 2012.

    admin
    17 Jan 2012 | 2:56 pm
According to Billboard 2011 report the vinyl hit a new record – a whopping  3.9 million sales in 2011. That’s 1.1 million more sales than the previous record, set in 2010. And trust me, we gonna see more and more of shiny 12″ wax being printed, destributed and spinned at the clubs in the year 2012. There are three main reasons for this: In 2012 everybody and their mom is a dj. In 2012, Laptop Dj + vinyl Dj = True The lost generation of digital valuables and the return of physical medium So let’s break it down. In 2012 everybody and their mom is a dj. The Dj’s…

    12 Jan 2012 | 4:28 pm
The X-mas and New Year holidays are over. We are back on track like a couple of polar bears waking up from a long sleep. So is the Paris based techno label Law Recordings. They open 2012 like a deck of cards pulling out a real jocker to strat the year. Paul Peanuts 2 track Ep is a journey into a blippy, bouncy techno that gets better and better the longer you play the track. The B-side (Test01) is kind of straight forward in willing to make you dance like a chicken on acid. While the A-side takes a bit of experimental approach as it explores all the corners of the sound arrangement for a few…

The fun loving producer duo EZLV out of the Montreal are kick-starting a new label named after the life loving Savannah animal. First out on Surricate is a Swede in exile – Simon Svensson living in US. The original track start to finish got the kick that chews it’s way straight into your soul. The oldschool Detroit wibes take us on a deep journey straight into the Liquid Room where champagne glasses sparkle and the models hang out at the poolside nodding to this lovely deep track. Ezlv remix adds a bit of percussion and speed turning the stakes up while the night goes on.
  • Ten best tracks of 2011 according to us.

    admin
    6 Jan 2012 | 3:39 pm
    1. Hardfloor – Acperience (Robert Babicz Remix) The German techno veterans Hardfloor just celebrated their 20th birthday with a tripple vinyl collection. The Robert Babicz remix brings the 1993 Acid classic back to life in a totally new form. This is definitely the track of the year. Hardfloor 2. Noir & Haze – Around (Solomun Vox) Nobody creates sexy deep house like Hamburg based producer Solomun. In the form of a slow latin inspired ”pasodoble” he interprets dansih producer Noir and Haze track ”Around” creating this beautifully sad peice of unforgetable house music.

  • Jacques Lu Cont – Church

    wow
    28 Jan 2012 | 4:08 am
Jacques Lu Cont is back with a Justice vibe on his latest single ‘Church’ Formerly Madonna’s manager in the mid 2000′s, this English DJ with a penchant for faux French pseudonyms is probably best known for his work under Les Rythmes Digitales. He created a tracked named ‘Darkdancer’ which was a true electro classic in the establishment stage of the genre or his 1999 mainstream hit ‘Jacques Your Body‘. This track is one that I believe you should judge with a very similar style to Justice. Filled with organs and a slight darkness about it.

  • BURNS & NT89 – Traffic (original mix)

    wow
    28 Jan 2012 | 1:35 am
Burns and NT89 combine their love for intense electroclash music by making an ep title track ‘traffic’ in harmony together. Both known for their intensity in style this ep lives up to that title, including remixes from both Autokratz and Attaque! I have always had a love/hate relationship with this style of music. The 1 minute 30 long build up is siren whiney, however if you can stand the test of time, the stripped back acid electro feel to the track that proceeds is pure awesome. In a recent and lengthy Facebook update Deadmau5 has signalled his relaxed attitude to the potential idea of DJ competitions heralded by the mainstream. “It seems that EDM has been deemed fashionable enough these days to warrant its own long overdue prime time slot to the masses. “This concept, if anything, is going to catapult the awareness of EDM through the roof. “Yup, our poor little coveted secret cool underground society will be thrown into the masses. Is this a bad thing? I don’t think so.” This comes in light of Simon Cowell tossing up the idea of a DJ x…

"Nothing but a Grand Piano. No Synths, drones, pan pipes or tubular bells. I think it's quite different. The music is very gentle, slow and quiet, more about the space between the notes than the notes themselves." Jeremy de Tolly 's introduction is a perfect introduction and an accurate description of his solo piano album "Piano Nocturnes, Volume One" . "These pieces express emotions that have no specific name; the songs are meant to exist in the background of your life. It’s not archetypal music of any kind. I just read a short rant over on PercussionLab about the idea of oversharing your work: We have grown accustomed to sharing our most fleeting thoughts with potentially billions of people, and that reach does little to dissuade us from posting. The same holds true for our creative output and that is not a good thing. Uploading more and more of your latest tunes will not get you “discovered” faster, nor booked for gigs, nor land that private jet. It only presents more opportunities for people to dislike your work and get sick of you. Creative work is inherently doomed because of its…

Even though I had some great rehearsals and recordings here at home, I wasn’t sure how the whole thing would flow together. This week, my anxiety level was going up even higher. To make matters worse, I was putting off a formal rehearsal. Last night I decided to do a live stream of my rehearsal because I thought that the pressure of people watching would actually make it a rehearsal, and not something that I could easily back out of and sit on the couch. Just before going live on ustream with my practise,…
  • The Phish Method for Success in Music

Yet another new year, and yet another flurry of activity from friends who have been satisfied by Phish on their NYE run of shows. I personally am not a huge “phan” of the band any more, but as we move into a very critical year for the music industry, I want to tell you about a few things that makes this band successful. Maybe we can borrow some of these concepts in electronic music?
  • Syncing Audio to a Midi Rhythm

I got a question from 1minutemiracles on twitter: do you know any gear that does this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JRpExKYumM but the other way around? ie. the drum machine would control the tempo of some external audio source. This is a good question, and it’s definitely possible. Here’s the thing though: You have to remove CD-Js from the equation because they don’t warp music. Off the top of my head, programs like Traktor, Torq and Ableton Live are all able to warp a track of music, and then have the tempo of that music controlled by any midi clock. So if you watch the…
  • How the T-Pain Mic is Part of the New Music Revolution

    mrtunes@gmail.com (Mr. Tunes)

I can’t lie. When I first saw the I Am T-Pain mic in Walmart, I was almost ecstatic in seeing this product. It’s so cheesy, that you can’t help but be excited about it. There is actually a back story to this product that studio nerds will find interesting. Profiled in this month’s Fast Company, T-Pain originally had worked with Antares (the maker of Auto-Tune), in developing the app for the iPhone. However, he was looking for some kind of more formal naming rights to this effect, which Antares was apparently not willing to offer. Yes this is a little confusing, but in…

Hello to anyone still checking the blog once in a while, and hello to anyone who stumbles onto this through Google. Google certainly does love this blog – our EDC and Coachella posts are ranking very high on Google even though they are super outdated. So to anyone reading this, here’s the deal. The EDM community continues to grow and there are lots of people and blogs that are talking about it all day and all night. Some ones that I particularly like are Dancing Astronaut, TranceAddict (I post once in a while but loooove to troll), and LessThan3. Each one has its own pluses and…

Hello, Los Angeles, today is a very special day. You and me are part of history now. This is the day that we’ll all remember that dance music is bigger than anything else in the world, I thank you for that! So let’s celebrate and party. When Tiesto speaks everyone listens. His show at the Home Depot Center on October 8th proved why he sets the standard in EDM music and why he will continue to be at the forefront of what can only be called a musical revolution. Okay. So. Maybe I’m getting a little too intense, but Tiesto’s show was nothing short of spiritual. I’ve…

Whether you like dubstep or techno, whatever your entry point, at some point someone is going to say, ‘Have you seen Tiësto?’ -Billboard Magazine It’s true. Even EDM neophytes are aware of Tiesto. He’s essentially a deity in the electronic community, his presence is so much greater than himself as an individual. I’ve been lucky enough to see Tiesto three times in the past year (the only year I’ve been exposed to any type of EDM music. Also known as the best year ever) but saying I’m excited about his College Invasion show at the Home Depot Center…

I was pumped to find out Calvin Harris was coming to NYC. His set at Masquerade Motel literally blew my mind and when he tweeted he was coming to New York I was sold. No questions asked. When I found out he was coming to Pacha I changed my mind—-but then he decided to come to Lavo, aka Narnia on earth, and I was back on board. So. Let’s talk about his set. First Calvies gets major points for actually hanging out in the crowd while Treasure Fingers was opening up. Axwell is by far my favorite thing from Sweden. I said it. I like him better than ikea, socialism and definitely more than Swedish fish. Those are waxy and synthetic. Axwell is anything but. There’s a reason why my best friend has Swedish House Mafia listed as her religion on facebook. Axwell’s show at the Roseland was as close to a spiritual experience as I’ll probably ever get. But before I can even get into the show I have to talk about the venue. Because it’s gross. I get that the Roseland Ballroom in NYC is probably one of the best places for DJs to do shows in…

    28 Jan 2012 | 5:29 am
Slated for a late February/Early March release, No Sleep EP is the latest offering from Finland’s mercurial dubstep export Desto. I listen to so much future garage, post-dubstep and [insert other strangely coined genre here] these days, that I rarely seem to indulge in some good old chest-boxing dubstep, and this is exactly what Desto delivers. Accented with a cold melodious twist that transports me to the Arctic tundra, a blast of ‘Monsters About’ evokes vivid images of the outpost in The Thing (which is actually set in Antarctica, but whatever). Out Monday on Push and Run, Treehouse is the second release from Ifan “not James Blake” Dafydd. Comprising title track ‘Treehouse’ with ‘To Me’ on the flip, it’s as stirring and symphonic as ‘Miranda’ and I’m not talking about the androgynous comedienne who looks to the camera after every single joke (kind of like a poor man’s David Brent). As beautiful as this release is, it’s not likely to get much actual treehouse play because not many of those things are rigged for sound. Apart from the expensive ones Hollywood…

Way back in October 2011 (so, like, forever ago) I described Pedestrian’s musical temperament as “wondrously delicate yet lush”, a statement which could be partially applied to this remix of ‘Mouves’ from Tropics’ recent album Parodia Flare. By partially applied, I mean that while it’s certainly not as delicate as Hei Poa, it is still lusher than a tropical bird convention held in the default Windows XP wallpaper field…which, I must admit, is rather lush. I would have actually come up with a brand new way to describe this sublime offering, but…
