Undercover – Marc Houle Jacking drums sit alongside clinical robot voices, the break of the track melts down to a chip tune melody straight out of a vintage Sega game, followed by that ever present archetypal Houle bassline. It’s a track which in parts is a retro Chi-Town house modernised into a sweaty dance floor work out for the creepier moments in the club world. Expect powerful electronics, celestial drones and distorted noise throughout the entire 37+ minutes. If you liked Prurient’s Bermuda Drain LP from last year, then you need to check this out asap. M=MINIMAL, 2011 // LP / BUY: VINYL / CD / DIGITAL Another fine LP from the ever-interesting German imprint M=Minimal has found its way into my record collection recently. This label has been on my watchlist for quite some time now, consistently putting out interesting records and reissues. Andreas Reihse is a Berlin-based musician, mostly known as one of the members of electronic pop band called Kreidler. Romantic Comedy is another one of his rare solo outings: long, percussion-driven and club-friendly tracks that resemble the sound of vintage krautrock and early Kraftwerk.

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sebastian Oliwa has been a fan of analog synthesizers for quite a while. I stumbled upon one of his tracks while reading my daily dose of music blogs recently and kindly asked him to do a mixtape for me. Sebastian says that his musical output is heavily influenced by the so-called ‘three faces’ of his musical personality: classical music, the ethnic music from Africa and Asia, and all forms and types of music made with synthesizers. He doesn’t use any kind of drums or percussions in his tracks, but he loves to use sampled classical…

I'd heard about this video from a friend some time ago but hadn't got around to watching it. This morning I did, and I'm very glad... Take a look, it's a 25-minute video of Bon Iver performing, basically stripped back to just piano and vocals. The songs themselves, taken from the last album and the Blood Bank EP together with a cover of Bonnie Raitts' 'I Can't Make You Love Me', are a step back from their originals - the video description describing them as 'abstracted'. To me they sound as though they have been consumed through a lens that puts some more space into them - they feel…

    3 May 2012 | 3:48 pm
The Units are the kind of band whose greatness seems to have been obscured by the passing of time. The endless retrospectives of post-punk all too often skip over their role in the rise of the synth. Instead we heave buckets of sloppy sycophantic love onto Throbbing Gristle, Devo and Gary Numan, passing straight by the San Francisco synthpunk scene's heroes without stopping. Don't get me wrong - Devo and Numan were undeniably innovative and great. If you are prepared to wade through it some of Throbbing Gristle's output is also fantastic. The strange thing is that the Units are just as great…

It seems like some time since we last heard from Robi Insinna. Better known as Headman he has had a number of well regarded singles and remixes over the years. Whilst his last album, the Dieter Meier (of Yello fame) featuring 1923, was only released two years ago it feels like the limelight has shifted off of Headman a little. And that is a shame because Headman makes just the kind of slightly scratchy post-punk electro that I happily lap up - place him somewhere between the discordant party noise of Soulwax and the punk funk of !!!. 'Turning', featuring long term collaborator Tara on vocals…

LSD-25 – Butch On a limited vinyl release of 500 copies out on Cecille, this track is one to save for those special moments. A fusion of deep tech house and 60's progressive acid rock this track ties beautifully ties together both cultural sonic revolutions. Knocks, snares and deep groove are overlaid with a extended stressed guitar ballad that roars its way though the 11 minute long track.  Rampa – Everything 'Everything' starts off with Meggy moaning an affirmative mmmhhmmm through the first few bars before expanding into catchy and explicit lyrics. It’s a track which in parts is a retro Chi-Town house modernised into a sweaty dance floor work out for the creepier moments in the club world. I’ve come to the conclusion that Newcastle, an industrial shipping town on the NSW central coast, must be a formidably boring place to live. That’s why incredibly impressive music like this keeps dripping from there like a giant, moist mop of twenty-something angst held above Sydney: Boatfriends is kinda like I Break Horses if their dad left home at age 12 and their stepdad wouldn’t let them chase their big city dreams of going to art school. -Mandu

A Brisbane-based electronic artist making a few ripples down south. He’s approached the new single Chalk Outlines with a dense, almost orchestral, brush that (for me) is jarringly offset by his dry, laconic voice. See what you think, ’cause while I really enjoy this in theory, there’s some anchor that keeps me floating off to oblivion, despite a stadium shattering piano drop during the bridge. This was most definitely conceived in Tunetown. Sure 1985 is a funky lil number but the Casio Social Club remix brings the heat with a bangin bassline. I must admit, I get weak at the knees for a fun vocal that I can sing along to that has the magic to transport me to another era and this does just that. It doesn’t have the fun choppiness of the original, but hey Casio Social Club promised to bring us ‘Back to 85′ and they’re doing just that. Grab it on Juno Download June 1st Nine Lives feat. Well once you have downloaded the ‘Live Pack’ you have exactly 24 hours to assemble, master, upload and submit. Our tip? Don’t reinvent the universe. For me, DJing, clubbing, festivals, and party-going has always been about hearing an amazing set of music but something that’s irked me, especially as of late, has been that it seems many beginner (and even professional) DJ’s are beginning to use a combination of pre-recorded, planned, or structured DJ sets for their performances. There are two sides to the debate so I’ll try to play Devil’s advocate and list off why each have their pro’s and con’s (even though, personally, I hate when they do this). This sweet new piece of electronic music is definitely worth checking out. image from broadsheet Related links The Original Neopolitan Dreams…
  • CU-Boulder: The Nation’s #1 Party School

    Ryan Park
    10 May 2012 | 12:25 pm
Last year, CU-Boulder was crowned #1 Top Party School in America for 2011, despite the school’s administrative efforts to tone down the party-school label. Surprisingly, CU-Boulder has done an excellent job at toning down that image over the past few years. Welp, that’s shot to sh*t. A video released yesterday by a company called I’m Schmacked shows CU-Boulder students partying like there is no tomorrow. America,I guess there is no denying the elevation. CU-Boulder remains the ultimate Rocky Mountain high.

This video was taken from the two-night New Years Eve concert in Colorado. Derek Vincent Smith or, Pretty Lights, always makes the extra effort to put on an amazing show in his home state of Colorado. For two non-stop nights the Broomfield, First Bank Center was filled with a high energy crowd that was completely infatuated by a brilliant musical performance. Pretty Lights has already scheduled his return to Red Rocks amphitheater on August 17th & 18th. If you consider yourself a music fan, there is no legitimate reason to miss this annual summer show. • Kastle – Uh Oh

    David
    12 May 2012 | 9:55 am
“Uh Oh” isn’t just what your cousin says when your Aunt walks in on her conducting a lucrative webcam party, it’s also the name of new track by San Francisco’s Kastle. Pitch shifted vocal snippets and a stripped down beat that wouldn’t sound out of place on a [insert alternative/experimental hip-hop act here] mixtape, it’s got serious swa…character (phew). I haven’t posted in a while — well, a week or two — hence the crude joke and inability to write something worth reading, but this is a good tune to return with. Listen after…

Pitting 10 acts against each other for a chance to play at Gottwood festival in Anglesey, this DJ competition has more at stake than a couple of vinyls and a pat on the back. To enter, each act submitted a mix and after being shortlisted, were left to the mercy of the Facebook public with a poll being put up to decide the winner. At the moment it’s essentially a two horse race, with Atlas and Solus outstripping their nearest rivals by over 1000 votes and so, I’m here to nudge you in the direction of the former (Atlas…if your memory’s really that bad). If you’re…

    25 Apr 2012 | 4:18 pm
Broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on Monday, Generation Bass explores the evolution of UK bass music from the roots of dubstep to some of the more genre-defying efforts of recent years. With interviews from Skream, Benga, Hatcha, Mosca, Disclosure and a fair few others, there’s a decent amount of enlightening opinion and snippets of history here that will put you in good stead if you ever go on Eggheads and have to compete with Daphne in the category “UK Bass Music”. It could happen. Lie on your bed, grab a snack and have a listen over at the Radio 1 site. Related PostsSolitude…

    23 Apr 2012 | 4:20 pm
The latest installment in our sporadic yet always satisfying mix series comes courtesy of a producer I’ve been posting a fair bit about recently. Hailing from Glasgow, Mirrors is a high-calibre architect of the house and garage variety, although recently exhibited his polymathic talents by dropping a stellar hip-hop release in the form of Superior EP. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, the mix itself is a compelling exploration of new house music with throwback elements. Featuring tunes from the likes of Synkro, Boddika & Joy Orbison, Mosca, Jack Dixon and Mirrors himself, the…

You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for this. Seriously, almost as long as the entire world has been waiting for Detox (well..maybe not an entire generation, but you get the point). The first release from Fantastic Mr Fox since the truly astonishing Evelyn EP way back in 2010, San’en EP drops on Black Acre on June 7th. Comprising four tracks, three of which feature vocalist and label-mate Alby Daniels, this will surely be one of the most anticipated releases of the year. I know this news actually broke a few days ago, but I heard ‘Yesterday’s Fall’…

It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Big Gigantic drop something new (or at least it feels like it), mostly likely doing the tour hustle. Glad to see this remix drop yesterday, it is definitely representative of their “new” sound, which is really just a wobbly version of their old sound (that sax is still just as fresh as it always was). Kap Slap released his latest mixtape Frequent Flyer a couple days back on Soundcloud, and it’s full of party-friendly mashes. I was a little disappointed at the lack of new work featured on the mixtape, as most of the tracks were previously released as singles or featured on his Spring Break Mix a few months back. But I’ll give the guy some props, for finally creating a Carly Rae Jespen mashup that’s actually tolerable to listen to. Personal favourite of the bunch is Avicii’s Epic Hangover, but definitely give the whole mix a listen.
